I am all alone At one with my thoughts Trying not to fall inside This depression it has wrought The quiet is so loud Deafening my senses Leading me to second guess Even my noblest of pretenses I remind myself This too shall pass I am fighting for better tomorrows Better days that will last It is okay to be sad This will go in a little while For I am taking the time now To truly learn how to smile
Dancing with Demons
Anger, sadness, fear, madness
Which demon calls for me today?
Invading my life
Leading me astray
I wish I didn’t feel this
I’d be better off dead
Yet
There will be another tomorrow
So yet today I shall try
Try to find calm
Find a ray of happiness
Embrace the hope of better times
Bring order back into my life
One foot in front of the other
Step by step
(oh baby!)
I’m not done steppin yet!
The Power of the Black
There is nothing for you to say
Nothing to try and do
Just, just sit with me a spell
Let me spill out my darkest thoughts
Expel the sadness
Or is it madness
Then maybe
Maybe
I will be able to try again
It’s fucking hard
I hurt so much over things you couldn’t, wouldn’t understand
I feel them
It doesn’t make them any less real
Fuck, I wish I were selfish enough to just die
Brave enough to tell her everything about how I feel
I am such a coward
Such failure
Such a nothing
To me
I need to fix this
I don’t know how…….
Or if I even want to…….
Blah
Am I damaged
Is this my only role
Find and care in another
Only in the total to let go
Never did I intend
Bring someone I care for to harm
It is nothing I wanted to engage in
Possess this dishonest charm
To me it seems in time
People just drift apart
Is this truth of reality
Or the damage of my heart
I live, laugh, and love
Yet can never seem to sustain
Is this built from all my past failures
From when inexperience was to blame
Maybe one day will come
In which I may break this curse
Hopefully to see this while waking
Before carried away in a hearse
Choices
There comes a time in life. A time to look in the mirror and make choices.
· Are you going to suffer as you are?
· Are you going to sacrifice yourself to be what others want you to be?
· Are you going to sacrifice things to become what you want to be?
I am looking at my reflection. I am counting the scenarios trying not be overwhelmed with overthinking.
If I stay as I am, I would be depressed constantly. I most likely will regain weight again. I will have consistent anger issues. I would not be fun. I would be married, but not be a partner. We merely would be roommates surviving this life, versus challenging it. I don’t believe it can change.
If I sacrifice myself for someone else, I would probably become quiet and distant. No longer would I feel I could reach out to female friends, because I cannot be trusted. I might go insane with that. Or I might break and fall all in. I don’t know if that can happen unless her habits change too. WE are so far apart in daily routines, schedules, heck even values. That bridge looks so far to cross.
If I sacrifice to become what I want to be, I will have less down time, but more gym time. I need to make myself better. I might not ever have a great shape, but I will have a respectable one. I may sacrifice my marriage, but I need to embrace my friendships that I have had for years. The idea of turning away from friends because of their gender seems ridiculous to me. I need to figure out this chronic sadness, irritability, and tinnitus too. I have so many things I want to do as a better me, I need to stop procrastinating and just become. I know it will not be easy, but I must, I must, I MUST!
Or I will die trying!
They Don’t Say This at AA
I see you there with your bright smile
Yet I see such sadness in your eyes
Your eyes are pleading a deeper story
And yet your voice is calm and measured
What happened that scarred you so
Left your heart broken and your thoughts so grim
Who hurt you so deeply that sparkle in your eyes has gone away
Placed such a stain upon your soul
You never speak it aloud
But in my other sight I see
I just wish you could trust
I want you to be safe and protected
I know this life is unfair
It breaks you
Burns you
Bends you
Disappoints you
Warps you
Destroys you
Until you feel you’ve become something to be despised
But you are not
You deserve to be
Cherished
Trusted
Listened to
Have fun with
Challenge life with
Enjoyed
Loved
You deserve it all my dearest
You can have it
I promise
You deserve the sunshine
The Failure of Me
Do you ever feel alone
Like you are a living mistake
The world expects your smile
Yet all you are is fake
Did you ever make a priority
In your soul to reconnect
Forward motion thwarted, turned away
Every advance a reject
How can you carry on
Shouldering all of the load
Feeling the rot as it creeps inside
Leading your soul to corrode
I need to break free
To save my own heart
God please help me learn and understand
How to place myself first and start
I don’t want to give up on this life
But I need to learn to live
Please place the grace within me
To come to the words, “I forgive”
A Few Shades Darker
First, a disclaimer. This is not a call for help. This is not a last note before throwing myself to the Abyss. No, rather this is just an exploration into a subject many would rather have a jump reaction to, versus just taking the time to listen. I do not mean to offend anyone, but I will admit that even I am not sure where all this will go. So, with that said, let’s begin……
I don’t necessarily relish in knowing the complete allure of suicide. I do, however, know how it feels to be in crippling sadness and despair, such that taking one’s life does honestly feel like an option. I have been there, perhaps more than I can admit to myself. But I can admit that twenty-five years ago, yes, I was close once. Very close. Scary close. Close to the point that there are certain things that can trigger me into remember every vivid detail of that time. The smell, the weight, the total feeling of not being able to breathe, let alone get up. The total feeling of being so lost that I felt no one cared, and that all I could see was an end to making the pain stop. I remember sitting there, for what most likely was only a few moments but feels like hours, contemplating things being over.
I remember, demons in my soul begging for release, and angels in my head praying for me to just breathe. I realize that the metaphors of religious beings sounds cliché, but I do feel that is how this all personally manifested for me. Needless to say, I took that first breath in, and let it out. I realized where I was, and what I was attempting to do. I felt such guilt in that moment, and with it rage that I would allow myself to feel like this. Honestly, that almost pulled things to a conclusion, but I breathed again and lay down on the ground, howling with agony over how far I allowed myself to go. I needed that moment for in it, I let go of a small ounce of that weight. Between the sobs, I noticed that I was slowly being able to breathe easier. Eventually, the crying stopped and I hugged myself the hardest I ever could. I realize that the person who means the most to me, is myself. I needed to take the time to nurture my soul, to slowly start finding my own way.
I remember that, that took a long time, but when I was done, I picked myself up, and placed things away in such that no one may ever know what almost happened. I learned to start listening to that inner dialogue that I had become deaf to. I learned that it is okay to be my own friend, and to take stands for me, versus throwing everything for someone else’s pleasure.
I remember that day, because I need to. Because as bad as things may seem, we always can go a different way. It may be harder, it may have a cost, but we do not need to waste ourselves to our self-anguish. There is only one person who controls my destiny, and he is me.
I choose to remember versus forget this as well. I know that once again, I’ve heard the callings and the whispers. I’ve been feeling my self-doubt and self-loathing grow. I know I have allowed things to go sideways for to long. This time though, I can see it. I have reached out to talk with trusted friends and a professional as well. They all are helping me remember I can cope, and that I can be what I want to be. There is a lot about me that I forget, is pretty damn great. Yeah, it is tough, but I am going to find how to be happy.
It all begins and ends with me, and I, simply, I want more.
A Black Spot Where My Heart Should Be
I wish I didn’t feel this way.
That is the start of a conversation that I have yet to have, and possibly never will. I wish the bond that was between us was deeper, so much deeper. I wish I could tell you the depths of my sadness, how terrified I am of myself. I wish I could tell you how much I despise who I have become versus who I wish I could be. I wish I could trust that we could have this conversation, and not have it totally destroy all we have built. I wish I could have this conversation, and have it not hurt your soul. I wish this and more.
But I know on that day, hearts shall be broken. Souls crushed. Lives upended.
I wish I was strong enough to be able to say these things, and not have it all seem like I was never there with us, for us. I wish I could just fix it all.
But I have ignored it all for so long, that to start now to fix it, may very well just be the end.
Which would be sad and terrible, but it would allow us, allow you, to find someone who really would cherish and love you more than I ever could. I want the world for you, but I don’t know if I can ever give you what you need. I don’t know if I will ever find what I need.
I have a hole in my soul, that may never be healed. I fear all I do is mask it, and never be able to repair it. I’ve tried time, space, being alone, being with others, finding religion, losing faith, therapy, meditation, medication, contemplating death, reveling in life, and more. I know there must be more I can do, I just haven’t found it yet.
I don’t know if it will ever change, and that terrifies me to the core of who I am. It is my burden that no one knows of and is mine alone to carry. I don’t want someone to save me, because for the first time I need to learn to save myself.
I love you
I wish I loved me.
Turning Pages
Depression, self-loathing, doubt, despair.
I have had all of these things and more. So much that it has almost been a constant downward vortex pulling on my soul. It was so hard to see the good within. Like staring into the abyss and it staring back. I can break this cycle. I can be freed from the chains I have placed upon myself. I don’t know exactly when it started, but I feel it has been an extremely long time that I have had a positive image when looking at the entirety of me. But I am getting better. Every day I find something that I like about me. Heck, the other day I got lost in the mirror because the guy in it, for the first time, I recognized as being handsome. It was quite the odd realization. I managed to look past the weight, and into the person, and realized that there is a great looking man there. Sure, he needs some work, we all do. I need to help him.
That was a big thing. I never offer myself help. I can help anyone else with just about anything, but when it comes to myself, I am the worst. I sabotage, deny, get in my own way, lie, cheat, or steal any good intentions that I should have, and channel them somewhere else. Those days are done. I am extending my hand, and yea, I am cautious about accepting it but I know I must. The me who is the greatest champion for everyone else, needs to be his own too. No more waiting for someone else to change me, I can do this. I have the power. It’s a scary task, but I will succeed.
Even if it takes the rest of my life.
And I for one, am finally able to look forward to it.
