Blue Hazel

I wish I could say

That I have all the answers

I don’t

I might not ever

I do know this

I know your heart is hurting

I know you feel defeated

I know your pain of regret and remorse

I know your conflict in opening up to another

I know even more the reservation of wanting someone who you shouldn’t

I know it isn’t easy

I wish it were

Yet it if were, these choices would be easy

People would dodge this way and that everyday

There would be no sense of belonging

No need for the sense of longing either

I need that want and desire

I want to be wanted

I need that bond that I feel in my soul

I fear that if we entertained it we could have it

I fear that it would only be temporary

I fear that I would never be good enough

I fear that I could not provide everything you need

I also fear, that we could be the best thing this world has ever seen

But I don’t know nearly enough

You don’t know nearly enough about me too

What lengths we would go

What are true hopes and dreams are

I do know this

I will tell you all this and more

Just promise you will return that to me to

From there we can decide

Simple close deep friends

Or something truly, magnificent

It’s all in the Framing

Love is a many folded thing. It can make you feel good beyond compare, and it can make you feel anchored and lost.

To me, when it comes to love and a relationship, love takes on two dimensions, a vertical and a horizontal. With vertical love, it is a connection born between you and that person that starts in your minds and buries deep into your soul. A soul binding, star crossed, almost fated love. A binding in which the both of you earn each other’s trust, so deep, so intimate, that there are absolutely no secrets between you. A love in which you can feel the others pain from miles away. A love in which you can randomly reflect, and in that moment your other magically appears in some fashion. Be it a call on the phone, seeing something randomly that signifies them, or even a song plays on the radio. For me, this is the love I always strive to find, but even when found, fear to lose. A love that simply, overcomes all other things.

There also is what I call the horizontal love. This love, most often is born from convenience. Possibly one or both individuals are severely hurting, and just find another who is safe. In that safety, they spend time together, and begin a relationship, but never dive deeper into the others being. This love is easier, as it asks no hard questions, but infinitely more messy. When in the horizontal you can feel that this is okay, and to allow this partner into other aspects of life, fun, investment, even family. And it can be complicated on that morning when you wake up and wonder if this is all there is, and why there is no “deep” connection between you both. It is almost, just temporary.

In a perfect world, love is a combination of both. A joining in which there is no wonders about if this is as deep as it can be, and a joining where you are both always working together because you value this so greatly.

I know I have championed for the vertical, it is what I advise my girls to strive for, and for anyone really that listens to what I have to say. It is what I really want for myself, but seldom have known I had it, or was able to fully keep it.

I have failed, for I have settled in the past, and I could even say currently, for the horizontal. It is a constant gnawing at my soul and my psyche. Where once was warm contentment and safety, now just feels burdensome and tiring. I do not know if I can turn it into a vertical as well, I feel I try, but never get far. I fear, that if I let go with my true feelings, everything would become undone. This is not a good way to live life, and I really do not know what I should do. So for now, I go through the motions and survive, hoping that one day, I will find an answer.

CAT Scan

You might never know how frustrated I am

That I cannot see behind your eyes

Look into those hopes and dreams

Lift you towards the skies

I wonder what goes in there

If only I could see

Do you have hopes of being with someone

Am I a fool to hope it is me

I resign myself to this fate

Wonder of what may

Know that I mean from the depths of me

That I support in whatever you say

For at the end of all roads there is one thing

A fact that will always hold true

No matter where our roads might travel

I will always first be a friend for you

So Light But So Heavy

A day of proud achievement

One in which to relish and celebrate

Shattered by a cry in the night

A lowering of unimaginable weight

Self-doubt triggered

Growing in the quiet moments

How to provide

How to get through

I am not ready

I fear I will fail

Will I be the best for him

To these thoughts

Easy for others to dismiss

Yet rather please

Just listen and acknowledge

Show care, interest, concern

Pass on what you have learned

Reassure him in the knowledge

That he is not alone

A hidden strength is in family

Growing more than you have ever known

So, heed these words my brother

So much is to come

All the moments you will not want to miss

Find the faith in yourself that the rest of us see

For you my friend I know for certain

You got this

Break Time

Sitting at the lunch table

Notepad at the ready for inspiration

Watching others scurry about

Busily moving from one task to the next

No pattern or reason

Yet making things in their own time

Every once in a while, one may stop to chat with me

Sharing thoughts that come to mind

So many people

Yet so few real friends

Silent gazes judging

Wondering about the mysteries I pen

I bet some could be worried

About the darker things I write

But once in a while some listen to understand

This is such a welcome sight

So, I sit and write in silence

As is my want to do

Yet looking forward to a pleasant interruption

When they ask, “How do you do?”

A Few Shades Darker

First, a disclaimer.  This is not a call for help.  This is not a last note before throwing myself to the Abyss.  No, rather this is just an exploration into a subject many would rather have a jump reaction to, versus just taking the time to listen.  I do not mean to offend anyone, but I will admit that even I am not sure where all this will go.  So, with that said, let’s begin……

I don’t necessarily relish in knowing the complete allure of suicide.  I do, however, know how it feels to be in crippling sadness and despair, such that taking one’s life does honestly feel like an option.  I have been there, perhaps more than I can admit to myself.  But I can admit that twenty-five years ago, yes, I was close once.  Very close.  Scary close.  Close to the point that there are certain things that can trigger me into remember every vivid detail of that time.  The smell, the weight, the total feeling of not being able to breathe, let alone get up.  The total feeling of being so lost that I felt no one cared, and that all I could see was an end to making the pain stop.  I remember sitting there, for what most likely was only a few moments but feels like hours, contemplating things being over.

I remember, demons in my soul begging for release, and angels in my head praying for me to just breathe.  I realize that the metaphors of religious beings sounds cliché, but I do feel that is how this all personally manifested for me.  Needless to say, I took that first breath in, and let it out.  I realized where I was, and what I was attempting to do.  I felt such guilt in that moment, and with it rage that I would allow myself to feel like this.  Honestly, that almost pulled things to a conclusion, but I breathed again and lay down on the ground, howling with agony over how far I allowed myself to go.  I needed that moment for in it, I let go of a small ounce of that weight.  Between the sobs, I noticed that I was slowly being able to breathe easier.  Eventually, the crying stopped and I hugged myself the hardest I ever could.  I realize that the person who means the most to me, is myself.  I needed to take the time to nurture my soul, to slowly start finding my own way.

I remember that, that took a long time, but when I was done, I picked myself up, and placed things away in such that no one may ever know what almost happened.  I learned to start listening to that inner dialogue that I had become deaf to.  I learned that it is okay to be my own friend, and to take stands for me, versus throwing everything for someone else’s pleasure.

I remember that day, because I need to.  Because as bad as things may seem, we always can go a different way.  It may be harder, it may have a cost, but we do not need to waste ourselves to our self-anguish.  There is only one person who controls my destiny, and he is me.

I choose to remember versus forget this as well.  I know that once again, I’ve heard the callings and the whispers.  I’ve been feeling my self-doubt and self-loathing grow.  I know I have allowed things to go sideways for to long.  This time though, I can see it.  I have reached out to talk with trusted friends and a professional as well.  They all are helping me remember I can cope, and that I can be what I want to be.  There is a lot about me that I forget, is pretty damn great.  Yeah, it is tough, but I am going to find how to be happy.

It all begins and ends with me, and I, simply, I want more.

Weaving Vellum

There is a story
Slow to unfold
A tale of a day by chance
A girl and boy decided
Today was a day to move forward
To leave past hurt behind
To learn that not everyone is selfish

To trust in someone new

Little by little
They began to talk
To reminisce
Telling tales of their life’s journey

Relating their own great losses
Yet
Learning they both still hope
Better days shall surely come
To walk a life with another

Step by precious step
Walls began to come down
Defenses lowered
Respect and admiration grow
Both mindful of the long road ahead
Knowing they had demons to slay

Journeys yet to travel alone
But
Even for a fleeting instant
Despite all intention
They see in the other
Hope

Maybe one day
This page will tell a deeper story
For now it tells where they stand
Once a chance meeting between strangers
Now a slow becoming
Of something closer

Always

Things that could be written
Things that we could say
Still cannot heal a heart
That has been broken this day

There may be people
Who say he’s in a better place
But it does little to soothe your soul
When all you want is to touch his face

I wish I could do better
I wish I could say more
About the life he had lived
About the things he stood for

But in a way I feel I know all of this
For in this I know is true
For I can see his story and hopes and dreams
For they are written into the heart of you

So while you may feel great sadness
You will never need to look very far
For in those moments you shall see
He will always be a part of who you are

Bravery of Failure

There will come a time
When we have had enough
No matter how much we wanted
Things never changed
Abandon those thoughts
Save up for a new endeavor
It might be for a new career path
Admitting there is a skill you cannot master
Or realizing some people will not change

In that moment
We must be brave
Put aside the hopes of the past
The lamentation of what we wanted it to be
Swallow our pride
Admit defeat

Yet

Be ready to try again
For that, is what we do
The spirit carries on
It is within me
I know it is within you

So, who wants to roll the dice for round two?

Take a Walk With Him

On the path of life stands the Sheppard
Tirelessly waiting
Tireless tending
Bringing salvation to those that ask for it
Receiving glory from whoever gives it
Never wanting
Never asking
Just happy in the essence of his creations

I see him now as I cross the mount of life’s struggles
Ever smiling like an old friend
Yet even more so, as he is my first friend

He does not judge me already knowing of my lack of faith
He does not judge me for he knows my questions before I fathom them
He does not judge me, knowing that I have allowed myself to be disappointed
He knows my anger is not with him, but at myself for becoming angry for so long
For believing that the unexplained needs to have definition
For believing that there must be more than what I can see
For knowing that I am right
For knowing that thru him I see the unexplained
For that thru him definitions need not be cast, just believed
For knowing that still at my heart, I had my faith in him, just as he has faith in me

He is love before love had a name
I am humbled and grateful
For I always had been doing his plan even if I do not know it

I can see in his smile that he is happy I am here
But a sadness too as he is not ready to greet me
He will welcome me one day he says, but today is not my day to walk in the garden
That day will come when he calls for me
On that glorious day we shall walk from this earth forevermore
Into heavens waiting arms
Into our home
