Teenage daughter relationship drama is heavily romanticized in pop culture nowadays. So much so that there are countless dramas and comedies on the matter on our televisions and movies that it’s not really worthwhile to count. When the teenage daughter relationship drama comes home, Hollywood dims out and things get extremely real.
Such is my life with my girls. Sara, is currently happy with a boy she started dating about a month ago. They have been out on a handful of dates so far, and they talk way too much to each other for way too long. So far though, they seem to be having fun and being true to who they both are. Worst thing we as parents had to do so far is to reign in trying to go on dates on school nights. Sorry, dating and fun is for the weekend, school work, cheer training , and chores always come first. We work so we can play after all.
Tori on the other hand, recently broke off relations with a boy she had been seeing for about four months. One of the greatest disappointments in their relations was quite simply, that he could never say if they were in a relationship. I might not know many things, but telling the girl where your head and heart is at, is a cornerstone of relations. Failure to do so, leaves seeds of doubt about knowing what path you are actually on.
I am okay with that things ended, and she is too. She did recently tell me about a new boy she had started talking with, and feeling out intentions. She told her mom about him too, and she already has her asking him to go to the theatre, or on big dates, and even started planning on them going to Prom. Whoa there lady, slow your role and let these kids get there on their own!!
Now it wasn’t really as if Tori was asking for my advice, but I did lend my ear first, and some ideas second. I have gauged that she truly is interested, but is waiting things out. I told her that taking one’s time is never a bad thing. After all, he could be shy, or is building up courage. If it helped, set an internal clock for herself, and when that were to ring, just ask him one if he would like to go and do things one time. If he does, great, if he doesn’t, she at least knows that he would rather just be a friend. Now I freely admit, I might be the last person to get dating advice from, but I feel it is good counsel that applies well. She thanked me for that opinion and agreed that it was what she had been thinking too.
That, makes me smile on the inside, for she has more of me in her that either of us are aware of. Keep up the good work kid!
